At Diba Clinics in Rotterdam, back laser hair removal for men costs € 95 per session for the shoulders, € 125 for the upper back and € 200 for the full back; for women the full back costs € 160. The full back takes half an hour to forty-five minutes, and usually eight to ten sessions are needed, with six to eight weeks in between. Why the back needs more sessions.
Back hair in men is thick, sits deep and is influenced by testosterone. That means two things. The laser gets a good grip on it, because there is a lot of pigment. And the body keeps activating new follicles until well after you turn thirty, so hair also appears during the course in places where there was none before. That is why for the back we count on eight to ten sessions instead of six, and tell you beforehand that a maintenance session once a year is normal.
That is not a disappointing story, it is the honest one. After a course, the back is largely smooth for most men, and what comes back is thinner and lighter.

What you feel.
The skin on the back is the thickest on your body, and you notice that: on the upper and lower back it is a dull warm tap. On the shoulders and along the spine, where bone sits close beneath the skin, it is sharper. Most men find it less bad than they expected, and much less bad than waxing.
You do not have to shave it yourself.
The back has to be shaved before the treatment, and you cannot reach it yourself. If you cannot manage it at home, mention it when you book; we then schedule ten extra minutes and the therapist does it. No waxing in the four weeks before, because then the root is gone and the laser has nothing to aim at.
Who it works for and who it doesn't.
Dark hair on light to dark skin: yes. The GentleMax Pro has a separate wavelength for dark skin, and the therapist adjusts the settings per area. Grey hair does not respond; if your back has a lot of grey mixed in, only the dark hair is reduced. You hear that at the intake.
If you have many moles on your back, the therapist covers them or works around them. If a mole has changed, we send you to your GP first.
Acne and ingrown hairs on the back.
In some men with back acne, ingrown hairs play a part. Less hair then also gives a calmer back. If the acne is active and inflamed, we treat that first; laser over inflamed skin makes it worse. The therapist assesses that at the intake.

Aftercare,

- A loose cotton shirt on the day itself, and no backpack.
- No strength training, sauna or hot bath until the next day. Sweat and rubbing make the redness last.
- No sun on the back during the course, or SPF 50. This is why many men start in autumn.
