A six-month programme against hyperpigmentation, with a mask at the clinic and products at home.

The difference from Dermamelan, when it is best to start and what the programme costs with us is on Cosmelan and Dermamelan in Rotterdam.

What it does

Where it lands

Cosmelan starts with two weeks of preparation at home, then the mask goes on in the clinic and a fixed routine of months follows. It slows the production of pigment instead of only removing what is there, and that is why it runs so long. Sun, hormones and genes all help decide why pigment arises; so the work at home is not a side issue but the largest part of the programme.

What happens

Acts on

The stratum corneum

The treatment works on the outer layer of dead skin cells; the deeper layers are not treated in the same way.

  • Stratum corneumThe outer layer of dead cells. What happens here shows quickly and heals quickly.Passes through here
  • EpidermisWhere your pigment sits and where new skin cells come from.It works here
  • Upper dermisThis is where the connective tissue starts. What you reach here heals by building.Does not reach here
  • Deep dermisHair roots, vessels and the firmness of your skin. Working this deep needs a reason.Does not reach here
In the appointment

Every treatment starts with cleansing, and that is done by hand. Make-up and sebum come off and the therapist checks that everything is gone, because a device or an active ingredient that works on a layer never reaches your skin.

How it feels

What you notice in the chair

The first appointment is short. A mask goes on your face that you take home yourself and remove at home, after the number of hours you are given. That number is not a guideline but an agreement.

The weeks after, you do the work. You are given products with a schedule, and following that schedule decides the outcome more than what happens in the clinic does.

After a few days you start peeling. So we agree beforehand when you start, so that it does not coincide with a holiday or a busy week.

What it is for

What this treatment is meant for

On the left where this treatment works well, on the right when another treatment does more for you.

It works well for
  • Tackles stubborn pigment that single treatments fail on
  • Carries on at home, because most of this programme happens outside the clinic
  • Has a fixed start and end, so you know what you are starting
For this you choose something else
  • The homework is part of it; without that part the programme stalls
  • Sun brings pigment back, so protection stays part of the plan
  • For melasma, Dermamelan is usually the heavier and fitter choice

About Cosmelan

Frequently asked questions

What is Cosmelan?

Cosmelan is a programme by Mesoestetic against hyperpigmentation, lasting about six months. After two weeks of preparation at home, a mask goes on your face in the clinic, and then a fixed routine with products at home follows. It slows the production of pigment instead of only removing what is already there.

Does Cosmelan work for melasma?

It can, but for melasma we usually choose Dermamelan, the heavier version of the same brand. Melasma reacts to hormones and heat and can come back after any programme, especially after the summer: keeping it calm is more realistic than removing it for good. Which of the two suits you, the therapist establishes at the intake.

Is Cosmelan a peel?

Not like an ordinary peel, which comes off your skin again after a few minutes. Cosmelan is a mask that stays on for hours and that you remove yourself at home, after the number of hours you are given. You do start peeling after a few days, just as after a peel.

When do you see results from Cosmelan?

Usually after about a month. By then the spots are lighter and your skin looks more even. After that it keeps improving, but in smaller steps. We assess the final result after six months, at the end of the programme. If it already looks good after a month, do not stop: the production of pigment has not settled down yet, and the spots come back sooner.

What is the difference from Dermamelan?

The same set-up, a different strength and a different aim. Cosmelan is the lighter of the two and is chosen more often for sun damage and separate pigment spots; Dermamelan is more intensive and is used more often for melasma. Which of the two suits you, the therapist establishes at the intake.

How long does an appointment take?

Allow 60 minutes at the clinic. That is the time reserved for you in the calendar, including the cleansing beforehand.

How much recovery time do I need?

Peeling and redness in the first days, and months of strict sun protection.

How often do I need to come?

One programme of about six months

What does it cost?

720 euros per session. Every price is published on the price page.
