How do you choose a reliable skin clinic in Rotterdam?
You recognise a reliable skin clinic in Rotterdam by things you can check yourself: your skin therapist is in the Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics (Kwaliteitsregister Paramedici) and a member of the NVH, there is a complaints procedure, the prices are on the site in advance, a first appointment starts with an intake, the clinic is in your insurer's provider finder, and there are reviews on Google and on ZorgkaartNederland.

What you can check
in advance
Four things are online and can be checked in ten minutes. They do not say everything, but they say more than an impression of a website.
Skin therapist is a legally protected training title, set down in article 34 of the Dutch Individual Healthcare Professions Act. A four-year bachelor's degree in skin therapy belongs with it, and that programme exists in two places in the Netherlands. Beauty therapist is not a protected title; that says nothing about anyone's craft, but it does mean the title itself carries no guarantee.
The title says someone has done the training. The Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics says something else: that someone also practises the profession and keeps it current. Re-registration requires at least 1600 working hours over three years plus 160 points of continuing education. That register is public and you search it by name, including the name of your therapist at another clinic. Members of the Dutch Association of Skin Therapists (NVH) have to be in that register; on the NVH map you can find its members' practices.
For the non-paramedical part of the work there are ANBOS and the SKIN Register. The first is the trade association with a code of conduct, hygiene guidelines and a complaints procedure; the second registers beauty therapists by name. Those can be looked up too.
And then there are the ratings. A score on the site itself is there because someone put it there. A rating kept outside the clinic, such as on ZorgkaartNederland run by the Dutch Patients Federation, cannot be placed or removed by the clinic, and so says more. On Google, look at both the score and the number: an average of ten reviews shifts a lot with one new one, an average of hundreds does not. Also read a few recent reviews, including the critical ones, and how the clinic replies to them.
Which registers we belong to and how to check that is on quality and registrations. What each treatment costs is on the prices page, and what clients write about us is in the reviews.
What a first
appointment gives you
The second part you only see once you are inside, and it is the part that separates a treatment from a plan.
A first appointment should start with looking and measuring, and not with treating. Without a starting point there is no way to establish afterwards whether anything has changed, and then all that remains is the feeling that it was probably fine. So ask whether measuring happens, with what, and whether you get that image back.
Then a plan should follow setting out what is needed, how many times that is and what it costs. An amount that only lands in the treatment room is not a price agreement but a surprise. All rates should be findable in advance, and ours are on the price page.
The third is the hardest to ask and the most telling: what happens when treating is not sensible at that moment. Inflamed skin, tanned skin just before a laser treatment, a spot that has to be assessed by a doctor first. A no belongs with those, with a reason and an alternative.
Finally the photos. A before-and-after can only be compared if the light, the angle, the distance and the make-up are the same. If any of those differ, you are comparing two images and not a result. Ask how the images are taken, and whether you get to see your own side by side.
What a skin consultation involves
What helps and what we advise against
These points say something about the way of working. About the outcome of your treatment they say less than people hope.
This works
- Whether your therapist's title is protected, and whether the registration is in order
- Whether measuring happens before treating
- Whether the rate is findable in advance, versions and all
- Whether it is explained when something had better not happen
We advise against this
- Whether a treatment suits your skin. That only follows from the measurement
- How many sessions you need. A number beforehand is about someone else's skin
- Whether a more expensive device gives a better result. What counts is the choice behind it
- What it feels like to sit there. For that you have to have been once
Ten things to ask about
What you can check, how you do it, and how it is arranged here. The middle column works at any clinic, even if you do not come here.
| What to look at | How to check it | With us |
|---|---|---|
| Your therapist's title | Skin therapist is protected in article 34 of the Individual Healthcare Professions Act, with a four-year degree behind it. | Skin therapists, and when you book you hear who does your appointment |
| The registration | The Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics is public; you search it by name. For beauty specialists that is the SKIN Register.kwaliteitsregisterparamedici.nlskinregister.nl | Our skin therapists are in it, and the beauty therapists are in the SKIN Register |
| The professional association | Skin therapists are listed with the NVH, salons and beauty specialists with ANBOS. Both have a professional or conduct code and a complaints route.huidtherapie.nlanbos.nl | Our skin therapists are members of the NVH, and the clinic is affiliated with ANBOS |
| The measurement beforehand | Ask whether measuring happens before treating, and with what. | Every first appointment starts with a measurement on the EVE-M; € 50, waived if treatment goes ahead |
| The rate | Find the price list on the site and see whether your treatment is on it with its versions. | All rates are online, including the separate areas for hair removal |
| Reimbursement and contracts | Look the clinic up in your insurer's provider finder. A contract does not yet mean everything is reimbursed: that depends on your supplementary policy and the reason for the treatment. | Contracted with all Dutch health insurers; the reimbursement page shows per insurer what that means for you |
| The complaints procedure | Ask where you can go if you cannot work it out with the clinic. If that includes an independent complaints officer and a disputes committee, the route does not end at the clinic itself.cbkz.nldegeschillencommissie.nl | The ANBOS complaints procedure: first with us, then the complaints officer of the CBKZ, then the Geschillencommissie Uiterlijke Verzorging, the disputes committee for personal care |
| When something does not go ahead | Ask what happens when treating is not sensible at that moment. | You hear so at the measurement, with the reason and with where you can go instead |
| The before-and-after photos | Watch the light, angle, distance and make-up. If those differ, you are comparing two images. | Images from our own device, under the same light, which you see side by side at the check-up |
| The ratings | On Google, look at the score and the number, and see whether a rating exists that is not kept by the clinic itself, such as on ZorgkaartNederland.zorgkaartnederland.nl | On Google and on ZorgkaartNederland, where we cannot change anything. The reviews on our site come from the calendar |

Frequently asked questions
What should I look at in a before-and-after photo?
At light, angle, distance and make-up. If those four are the same, you are comparing a skin with the same skin. If any of them differ, you are comparing two images and the difference says nothing about the treatment. Ask too whether the photos come from a fixed device or from a phone.
Is a more expensive treatment better?
Not automatically. The price says something about the device, the time and the products, and nothing about whether that treatment suits your concern. A cheaper treatment that does the right thing gives more than an expensive one doing the wrong thing. That difference comes from the measurement and not from the price list.
Should I get a treatment plan on paper?
You should at least be told what is needed, how many sessions that is and what it costs, before you agree to anything. Here that conversation happens after the measurement, and you take the outcome with you. You are not committed to anything afterwards.
May I ask who will treat me?
Yes, and it is a normal question. You hear who will do your appointment when you book it. If you switch therapist, your file with the measurements simply stays in place.
How do I read the reviews of a skin clinic?
Look at the score and at the number. An average of ten reviews shifts a lot with one new one, an average of hundreds does not. Also read a few recent and critical reviews, and see whether a rating exists that is kept outside the clinic, such as on ZorgkaartNederland run by the Dutch Patients Federation. We are on Google and on ZorgkaartNederland; the reviews on our site come from our calendar.
What if a clinic wants to treat straight away?
Then ask what that choice is based on. Treating without a measurement can turn out perfectly well, but afterwards there is no way to establish what has changed, and with a concern that does not respond you do not know where it went wrong. So here a first appointment starts with looking and measuring.
When does a skin therapist not treat you?
When it isn't sensible at that moment. Then you hear that, and we advise you to wait or to see a doctor. Laser on tanned skin waits until your skin has its own colour back, and just before a sun holiday you plan it for afterwards. During pregnancy or breastfeeding a number of treatments are ruled out. A spot that changes, or an inflammation with fever, goes to your GP first.
How do I know whether a clinic is contracted with my insurer?
That is in your insurer's provider finder and usually on the clinic's site too. A contract does not mean everything is reimbursed: that depends on your supplementary policy and on the indication. We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers.
Does a device certificate mean anything?
It says the device is what it is called, and that is useful. It says nothing about the settings it is used with, and that is exactly where the difference between a good and a mediocre treatment sits. So ask instead who operates the device and how the setting is chosen.
What is a reasonable outcome of a first appointment?
That you know what you have, what can be done about it, how many times that takes and what it costs. And that you hear what cannot be done about it. If the measurement turns up nothing that needs treating, that is an outcome too, and you have paid for a consultation instead of a programme.
Can I go somewhere with a complaint about a treatment?
Yes. For the paramedical part that goes through the professional association and the Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics; for the beauty part through the ANBOS complaints procedure. Those routes stand apart from the clinic itself, and that is exactly the point of them.
Where in Rotterdam are you?
At Weissenbruchlaan 166 in Rotterdam, on the north side of the city. You park in the street. The route and the opening hours are on our contact page.
Unsure about an offer
Feel free to put it to us. We say what we think, even when the answer is that what you have found sounds fine or that your concern belongs with a doctor. You do not need an appointment for that.
If you know what you are after but are unsure about the timing or the combination with something else, ask via WhatsApp. There is a therapist on the other end and not a form.

Make an appointment right away
If you have not been here before, it starts with an intake: we measure your skin and go over what is possible. That fee is waived if we treat you in the same appointment.
Come by and see for yourself
At the skin consultation we measure your skin and discuss what is possible, with the number of sessions and the price. Then you decide, and you are not committed to anything.
