Electrolysis hair removal

Electrolysis is a hair removal method in which a fine needle follows the hair down to the root and switches it off with a short pulse of current, hair by hair. Because colour does not matter, it also works on grey, white and light blond hair that the laser does not respond to. At Diba Clinics in Rotterdam it costs € 60 per half hour of treatment time.

How it works

What electrolysis does

Where the laser needs a colour to aim at, this goes straight to the root. That is why the colour of the hair does not matter here.

The laser aims at the pigment in the hair root. If there is no pigment left, as with grey, white and very light blond hair, there is nothing to aim at. That is not down to the device or the setting; that is how laser hair removal works.

In electrolysis a fine needle goes alongside the hair into the follicle, down to the root. That gets a short pulse of current, so it is the root itself that is dealt with and not the colour. Per hair you feel a short prick.

It goes hair by hair, which makes it slower than laser. So it is meant for small areas, such as the chin, the upper lip and around the eyebrow, and for the odd hairs left standing after a laser course. A hair only responds in its growth phase, so you come in a series, with a few weeks in between.

If your hair does have colour, laser hair removal is faster and better value. For hair growth caused by PCOS there is more on the PCOS page. The treatment itself is on the treatment page.

Laser or electrolysis

Laser and
electrolysis together

The two do not rule each other out. In most cases it is an order of steps, and that saves you time and money.

If some of your hair still has colour, you start with a laser course. In one flash the laser covers a whole area and so works much faster than hair by hair. What is left afterwards, usually the light or grey hairs, goes with electrolysis. That way you do not pay per hair for what can be done faster.

If all your hair is grey, white or very light, electrolysis is the method meant for those hairs. That is not a second choice but the right treatment for that hair.

For large areas, such as legs or back, it is not suitable: hair by hair costs too much time and too many sessions there. You hear that at the intake too, along with what is possible in your case.

What electrolysis
costs with us

The rate goes per half hour of treatment time, because it depends on how many hairs there are. The intake arrangement is set out in full.

  • Electrolysis, per 30 minutes€ 60

How much time you need depends on the area and on the number of hairs. We estimate that at the intake, and after the first appointment you know better.

All the clinic's rates

Is this your first visit

Then you book a treatment on advice. We reserve at most two hours for that: the intake, and then at least an hour to treat. If treating is safe at that moment and you want it, we do the first electrolysis in the same appointment.

What the intake costs

If you are treated in the same appointment, the intake fee is waived and you pay only for the treatment. If the treatment does not go ahead, the intake costs € 50. A separate intake without treatment lasts at most 30 minutes and always costs € 50.

Have you been here before

Then you book the electrolysis directly in the calendar. Count on 30 minutes. If anything has changed since your last visit in your skin, your medication or your expectation, say so when you arrive.

What helps and what we advise against

Electrolysis is precision work for small areas. For large areas with dark hair the laser is the better answer.

This works

  • Grey, white and very light blond hair, which the laser does not work on
  • The odd hairs left standing after a laser course
  • Small areas where precision counts, such as chin, upper lip and eyebrow
  • Anyone who cannot or does not want laser, because of skin type for instance

We advise against this

  • Large areas such as legs or back. Laser hair removal is faster and better value there
  • A full area in few sessions. It goes hair by hair, so it takes more time
  • A result after one appointment. It builds across the series
  • Skin that is irritated or inflamed at that moment

Who does the treatment

The therapist first looks at whether some of your hair still responds to laser, because that is the faster route. What is left, the therapist does hair by hair.

Frequently asked questions

What does electrolysis cost in Rotterdam?

At Diba Clinics electrolysis costs € 60 per half hour of treatment time, as it is listed in the calendar. How much time you need depends on the area and the number of hairs. If it is your first visit, your appointment starts with a € 50 intake, which is waived if we treat in the same appointment.

Why does the laser not work on grey hair?

Because the laser seeks out the pigment in the hair root and the heat does its work there. Grey and white hair no longer has that pigment, so there is nothing to aim at. That is not down to the device or the setting.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Per hair you feel a short prick, and then a warm feeling in that spot. It is manageable, but because it goes hair by hair, a longer session is noticeable.

Is electrolysis permanent?

A hair whose root has been properly switched off does not come back. Because hairs are not all in their growth phase at the same time, you do need a series of appointments to settle an area. How many differs per person.

Can I combine it with laser hair removal?

That is the usual order. First the laser course for everything with pigment, and then electrolysis for the hairs left standing. That way you do not pay per hair for what can be done faster.

Which areas can you treat with electrolysis?

Small areas where precision matters more than speed: the chin, the upper lip and around the eyebrow. It is not meant for large areas such as legs or back; laser is faster and better value there.

How do I look after electrolysis?

The treated spots are red for a few hours and can swell slightly, much like after waxing. In most people that is gone the same day.

Does electrolysis help with hair growth from PCOS?

For the light hairs the laser cannot see, yes. With PCOS your body keeps making new hairs, so maintenance belongs with laser and with electrolysis alike. There is more about that on our page about PCOS.

Not sure

Not sure whether your hair responds to laser

You do not have to know that before you come. At the intake we look at the colour and the thickness of your hair, and then you hear whether laser, electrolysis or a combination works best.

If you know what you are after but are unsure about the timing or the combination with something else, ask via WhatsApp. There is a therapist on the other end and not a form.
