What electrolysis costs with us, why the laser cannot see grey hair and how it works alongside laser is on Electrolysis in Rotterdam.

What it does

Where it lands

The laser aims at the pigment in the hair root. If there is no pigment there, there is nothing to aim at; that is why grey, white and very light blond hair does not respond to laser. In electrolysis a thin needle goes into the hair canal alongside the hair and the root itself gets a short burst of current. Colour then does not matter. It goes hair by hair, so it is slower than laser and it is meant for small areas.

  • Stratum corneumThe outer layer of dead cells. What happens here shows quickly and heals quickly.Passes through here
  • EpidermisWhere your pigment sits and where new skin cells come from.It works here
  • Upper dermisThis is where the connective tissue starts. What you reach here heals by building. It works here
  • Deep dermisHair roots, vessels and the firmness of your skin. Working this deep needs a reason.Does not reach here
In the appointment

What happens,
in order.

Every treatment starts with cleansing, and that is done by hand. Make-up and sebum come off and the therapist checks that everything is gone, because a device or an active ingredient that works on a layer never reaches your skin.

  1. Checking first whether laser is possible

If there is pigment in the hairs, laser is faster and cheaper. This is for what is left afterwards.

  2. Hair by hair

A fine needle follows the follicle down to the root. Per hair you feel a short prick.

  3. In a series

A hair only responds in its growth phase, so more appointments follow with weeks in between.

What it is for

What electrolysis is meant for

On the left where this treatment works well, on the right when another treatment does more for you.

It works well for
  • Works whatever the hair colour, so on grey, white and very light blond hair too
  • Suits the odd hairs left after a laser course
  • Works on small areas where precision matters more than speed, such as chin, upper lip and around the eyebrow
For this you choose something else
  • Is not meant for large areas such as legs or back; laser hair removal is faster and better value there
  • Goes hair by hair, so a full area takes more sessions and more time than laser
  • Asks for patience: the result builds across the series and is not visible after one appointment

Frequently asked questions

Why does the laser not work on grey hair?

Because the laser seeks out the pigment in the hair root and the heat does its work there. Grey and white hair no longer has that pigment, so there is nothing to aim at. That is not down to the device or the setting.

Can I combine it with laser hair removal?

That is the usual order. First the laser course for everything with pigment, and then electrolysis for the hairs left standing. That way you do not pay per hair for what can be done faster.

What does this cost?

Sixty euros per half hour of treatment time, as it stands in the diary too. How much time you need depends on the area and on how many hairs there are; we establish that at the intake.

How long does an appointment take?

Allow 30 minutes at the clinic. That is the time reserved for you in the calendar, including the cleansing beforehand.

How much recovery time do I need?

The treated spots are red for a few hours and can swell slightly, much like after waxing. In most people that is gone the same day.

How often do I need to come?

A series, with a few weeks in between. How many depends on the number of hairs and on the area.

What does it cost?

60 euros per session. Every price is published on the price page.
