Pregnant or breastfeeding
During pregnancy and while you are breastfeeding we do not do some treatments: for peels, microneedling, skin boosters and the pigment programmes the research to say they are safe is missing. What is possible is measuring, advising and the gentle facial treatments, such as dermaplaning. Say so when you book, and we choose from those.
- Always possible
- Measuring and advice
- Usually yes
- Dermaplaning
- Wait
- Peels and needling
- Pigmentation
- Often changes by itself

Why part of it
has to wait
It is almost never about a proven danger. It is about the absence of research, and in this period that is a reason in itself.
For understandable reasons, pregnant women are not included in research into skin treatments. So for part of what we do there is no evidence at all that it is safe, and none that it is harmful. When both are missing, not doing it is the only choice that can be defended.
On top of that, your skin reacts differently in these months. Hormones make pigment cells more active, the blood flow is higher and the skin is often more sensitive. A peel or a laser that went calmly before can now give a reaction it otherwise would not have.
With breastfeeding something else plays a part: some of the substances that go on or into the skin during a treatment have not been studied for what ends up in breast milk. So in our policy that period runs along with the pregnancy.
For pigment there is a second reason to wait, and it is practical. Spots that appeared during a pregnancy often largely fade afterwards. Treating while the driver is still on costs money for a result you would partly have got for free.
There is one exception to the waiting, and that is the measurement. It puts nothing into your skin and gives something precisely now, because hormones change pigment, oil and sensitivity all at once. What you record in these months is later the starting point that shows you what really stayed and what faded on its own.
What pigment does in this period is on melasma. How stretch marks work after a pregnancy is on stretch marks.
What is possible
in those months
More remains than people think. Most of it works at the surface, and that is exactly why it is possible.
The measurement is always possible. Your skin is mapped, you hear what is going on and what will fit later, and that image is the starting point to begin from straight after breastfeeding. For anyone who sees change in her skin during this period, that is often the most useful thing to do now.
Dermaplaning is possible, because only a sterile blade passes over the outer layer and no acids are involved. A gentle, cleansing facial treatment is usually possible too, with products the therapist selects for it. What exactly fits, she judges at the appointment.
Beyond that, this is the period in which sun protection gives the most. With pigment that has come up during pregnancy, protecting daily keeps the spots lighter and stops them spreading. That is not a delay but treatment, and it is the one part that already works now.
Your own routine changes in these months as well. You leave retinol and the stronger acids alone, and your skin also reacts more sensitively than you are used to. What does fit is usually a simpler schedule: gentle cleansing, a moisturiser and daily sun protection.
Put it in your skin profile before you come, too. Then it is in your file before the conversation starts, and the therapist does not have to change the plan halfway through.
About dermaplaning
What helps and what we advise against
The line lies at what goes into or through the skin. What stays at the surface is usually fine, in consultation.
This works
- The skin analysis and the advice, in any month
- Dermaplaning and a gentle facial treatment, in consultation
- Sun protection and a home routine that keeps your skin calm
- Making a plan for the period after breastfeeding
We advise against this
- Peels with acids, the milder strengths included
- Microneedling, on the face and on the body
- Skin boosters and anything that goes into the skin with a needle
- The Cosmelan and Dermamelan pigment programmes
What is possible and what
waits until after
Per treatment, what happens during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. Where there is doubt, it is written as doubt and not as a rule.
| Treatment | During pregnancy | During breastfeeding |
|---|---|---|
| Skin analysis | Possible, in any month | Possible |
| Dermaplaning | Possible. No acids, only the outer layer. | Possible. |
| HydraFacial | Usually yes, with adjusted products. | Usually yes. |
| Chemical peel | No. Listed as a contraindication by the peel ranges. | No. |
| Microneedling | No, not on the body either. | No. |
| Skin boosters | No. Listed as a contraindication for the U225. | No. |
| Laser hair removal | In consultation; usually we wait until afterwards. | In consultation. |
| IPL for pigment or redness | In consultation; pigment is changing anyway now. | In consultation. |
| Cosmelan and Dermamelan | No. We do not start it in this period. | No. |
| Treating stretch marks | Measuring is possible, treating is not. | No. We wait until after breastfeeding and then assess again. |

The calendar is more up to date than this list: within opening hours not every hour has a therapist free.
The skin therapist doing your appointment, based on what you tell us and on what the measurement shows. If it is in your skin profile, it is known before you come in and the time goes to the conversation rather than to the questionnaire.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have a facial treatment while pregnant?
A gentle, cleansing treatment is usually possible, with products selected for it. Dermaplaning is possible too, because no acids are involved. What fits in your case, the therapist judges at the appointment.
Is microneedling allowed during pregnancy?
No. We do not treat with microneedling then, not on the body either and not at a shallower depth. After breastfeeding we assess again; with stretch marks that is often also the point at which they have already lightened on their own.
Is a chemical peel allowed while pregnant?
No. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are listed as contraindications by our peel ranges, and that holds for the milder strengths too. For skin that is rough or dull in this period we look at what is possible without acids.
Is laser hair removal possible during pregnancy?
We discuss that case by case, and usually we wait until afterwards. There is no research showing harm, but there is no research showing safety either, and on top of that hair growth changes with the hormones anyway. Say so when booking and we choose the moment together.
I have developed pigment spots during my pregnancy.
Protect, yes; treat, no. Spots that have come up from the hormones often largely fade after the pregnancy, and treating while the driver is still on gives little that lasts. Daily sun protection keeps them as light as possible in the meantime.
How long after the birth can I be treated again?
If you are not breastfeeding, measuring and treating can resume after the birth as soon as you feel up to it. If you are breastfeeding, we wait until that period is over. The measurement can go ahead in the meantime.
Do I have to say if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes, and preferably when you book. Then we reserve the right treatment and the right amount of time straight away, rather than having to change the plan at the desk. You can also put it in your skin profile beforehand.
Is it worth coming by already?
Often yes. The measurement records how your skin is doing now, and that is the starting point to begin from straight after breastfeeding. A separate intake costs € 50 and lasts at most thirty minutes.
Can I keep using retinol while pregnant?
No. You leave retinol and the related vitamin A acids alone in this period, and that holds for the stronger acids in your own routine too. What does fit is usually a simpler schedule: gentle cleansing, a moisturiser and daily sun protection. Bring your products to the appointment and we will go through them together.
Can I do anything about acne that comes up during pregnancy?
Within the limits above, yes. What falls away in this period are the acids, the medication and the treatments that go into the skin; what remains is gentle cleansing, an adjusted home routine and keeping an eye on how it develops. It often settles after the birth, and then we take up whatever is still there.
Why does breastfeeding run along with pregnancy?
Because for some of the substances used in a treatment it has not been studied what ends up in breast milk. That is the same reason as with pregnancy: the absence of research, and not a proven danger.
Where in Rotterdam are you?
At Weissenbruchlaan 166 in Rotterdam, on the north side of the city in a residential area. You park in the street. The route and the opening hours are on our contact page.
Not sure what is possible now
Call or message us before you book. We will look together at what fits in this period and what had better wait, and if need be we book only the measurement. That saves you an appointment that changes at the desk after all.
If you know what you are after but are unsure about the timing or the combination with something else, ask via WhatsApp. There is a therapist on the other end and not a form.

Measuring is always possible
At the skin consultation we record how your skin is doing now and discuss what is possible in this period. That gives you a starting point for later.
