What it does

Where it lands

Cosmelan starts with two weeks of preparation at home, then the mask goes on in the clinic and a fixed routine of months follows. It slows the production of pigment instead of only removing what is there, and that is why it runs so long. Sun, hormones and genes all help decide why pigment arises; so the work at home is not a side issue but the largest part of the programme.

The proportions are schematic; the depths beside them are not. Usual values for facial skin. The thickness differs per place on the body; on the back the dermis is a multiple of this. How deep we work in your case depends on the setting the therapist chooses.

In the appointment

Every treatment starts with cleansing, and that is done by hand. Make-up and sebum come off and the therapist checks that everything is gone, because a device or an active ingredient that works on a layer never reaches your skin.

What you notice in the chair

The first appointment is short. A mask goes on your face that you take home yourself and remove at home, after the number of hours you are given. That number is not a guideline but an agreement.

The weeks after, you do the work. You are given products with a schedule, and following that schedule decides the outcome more than what happens in the clinic does.

After a few days you start peeling. So we agree beforehand when you start, so that it does not coincide with a holiday or a busy week.

What is the difference from Dermamelan?

The same set-up, a different strength and a different aim. Cosmelan is the lighter of the two and is chosen more often for sun damage and separate pigment spots; Dermamelan is more intensive and is used more often for melasma. Which of the two suits you, the therapist establishes at the intake.

How long does an appointment take?

Allow 60 minutes at the clinic. That is the time reserved for you in the calendar, including the cleansing beforehand.

The first appointment

Start with a skin analysis

The therapist looks at your skin, measures with the EVE-M and establishes what suits you. You hear straight away how many sessions it involves and what it costs. If you are treated in the same appointment, the intake fee is waived.
