- How deep
- Upper dermis
- How long
- 60 minutes
- Recovery
- One to three days red, like a strong sun flush.
- How often
- A series of three to six, with four to six weeks in between.
Medically certified microneedling. It works on the layer where the structure of your skin sits.
What microneedling costs with us, the difference from the Dermapen and how a first appointment goes is on Microneedling in Rotterdam.
Where it lands
With fine needles, a great many small channels are made down into the upper dermis. That is where the connective tissue sits, and the skin answers with repair and collagen production. That repair is the goal; the pricks themselves are the occasion. So the result builds over weeks.

What happens
Acts on
Connective tissue
The scaffolding of your skin. What you prompt here repairs by building.
- Stratum corneumThe outer layer of dead cells. What happens here shows quickly and heals quickly.Passes through here
- EpidermisWhere your pigment sits and where new skin cells come from.It works here
- Upper dermisThis is where the connective tissue starts. What you reach here heals by building. It works here
- Deep dermisHair roots, vessels and the firmness of your skin. Working this deep needs a reason.Does not reach here
What happens,
in order.
Every treatment starts with cleansing, and that is done by hand. Make-up and sebum come off and the therapist checks that everything is gone, because a device or an active ingredient that works on a layer never reaches your skin.
Numbing and covering
A numbing cream is given time to work. That waiting is part of it.
Treating per area
The depth is chosen per area. Around the eyes the skin is thinner.
Giving it rest
After that only the products the therapist gives you.

Microneedling with the SkinPen, during the treatment
What you notice in the chair
First a numbing cream goes on, which needs half an hour to work. Then the pen passes over the area in strips. What you feel is a vibration and a pressure, strongest on your forehead and around your jawline, where the skin lies thin over bone.
Straight afterwards you are red, roughly like a strong sun flush, and your skin feels warm. That settles in one to three days. For the first twenty-four hours you leave your skin alone: no make-up, no exercise, no sauna.
What you see does not come that week. Connective tissue builds over weeks, so the comparison that counts is with the measurement from before the first session.
What this treatment is meant for
On the left where this treatment works well, on the right when another treatment does more for you.
- Works on scars formed by loss of structure
- Softens fine lines and uneven texture
- Lightens pigment left behind after a spot or small wound (PIH), and gives dull skin its shine back
- Reaches the layer a peel does not get to
- For sun damage and separate pigment spots you choose laser or IPL; the pen is for pigment left behind after inflammation
- A single session is too little; this works in a series
- With active inflammation we treat that first

The same technique, written out per concern
What changes in the settings, what you can expect and when something else is the better choice.
SkinPen for acne scars
Acne scars are not marks but shapes: the skin is missing connective tissue there, and so it catches the light differently.
SkinPen for coarse pores
A pore cannot close; oil has to get out.
SkinPen for fine lines
There are two kinds of line and they ask for different things.
SkinPen for surgical scars
A surgical scar is different tissue from the skin around it: the connective tissue lies in one direction instead of criss-cross.
Microneedling for stretch marks
Stretch marks are tears in the dermis formed from within because the skin was stretched faster than it could grow with.
