Nordlys IPL for sun spots and age spots

A sun spot is a place where pigment cells have been making too much for years. Light can tackle that build-up precisely, because it seeks out the dark and skips the skin around it.

The mechanism

Why this here does about it

The Nordlys light is absorbed by the pigment in the spot and not by the lighter skin beside it. So exactly the spot heats up and the rest stays cool; that is what sets an IPL apart from a peel, which takes off the whole top layer.

That heat makes the pigment grain break apart and work its way to the surface. In the days after, the spot first becomes darker and grainier, then it flakes away. That darkening is the sign that it has worked.

So this works well on sharply defined spots from the sun, and less on pigment that is diffuse or sits deeper.

The approach

What is goes differently than usual

  • Only on untanned skin

The light seeks colour. On tanned skin it hits more than the spot, and that risks discolouration. After the sun we wait.

  • Spots separately or a whole area

A few separate spots are treated precisely; with scattered sun damage the light goes across the whole cheek or the back of the hand.

  • Three to six sessions

With four weeks in between, so that there is time to see what has gone before work resumes.

What you can expect

What it gives you

Spots that lighten or disappear, with more even skin overall. In the first week after a session it looks worse than before; that belongs with it and is not a setback.

How often
A series of three to six, with four weeks in between.
Recovery time
Usually a few hours red.

When not

When you would choose something else

  • With melasma this is often not the right choice: that pigment reacts to heat and can flare from it.
  • A spot that changes shape or colour should be assessed by a doctor first, not treated by us.
  • On tanned skin it does not go ahead.
Everything about this concern
Frequently asked questions

What people asked about this.

Because the pigment has broken apart and is working its way to the surface. After about five to ten days it flakes away. Scratching or scrubbing in that period is the only way to turn it into a mark that stays.

The treated spot does not, but the pigment cells that made it are still there. Without daily protection new ones appear, and then you have spent the same money twice.

Everything above applies to this concern in general. What is going on with you and whether this is the right route is established by the therapist at the skin consultation. If the answer is no, you hear that too.
